Notitia’s Company Retreat: What skiing together taught us about the way we work

Skiing was an unbelievable experience. And it reflected a lot about how we work together at Notitia.

Notitia Company Offsite - Technology Culture

Notitia Team Culture | Company Offsite | Annnual Retreat | Corporate Culture

Last week, the Notitia team travelled to Queenstown, New Zealand, for our annual company offsite.

Over three days, we took on the haunted house (Fear Factory), shared some amazing meals (including the Michelin Star Sherwood), spent a full day learning to ski and made time for a team brainstorming session before heading home.

Different experience. One team.

Not everyone arrived on the slopes with the same level of skiing experience.

Some people felt comfortable straight away. Others were learning from the beginning. Everyone had different strengths, different challenges and a different idea of what a successful day on the mountain looked like.

That’s also what makes a multidisciplinary team work.

Our analysts, developers, designers and wider team bring different specialist skills and ways of thinking to every project. We don’t expect everyone to approach a problem in the same way. We bring those differences together to create a stronger outcome.

We learn by doing

You can understand the theory of skiing, but at some point, you have to head down the mountain. With instructors guiding us, we learned by listening, trying, adjusting and trying again.

That mindset is part of Notitia’s culture. We’re curious, open to new ideas and comfortable testing different approaches. We share what we know, learn from the expertise around us and continuously look for better ways to work.

Being highly skilled doesn’t mean having every answer. It means knowing how to learn, adapt and draw on the strengths of the people around you.

We challenge and support each other

Learning something new requires trust.

You need to be able to ask questions, accept feedback and push beyond what feels comfortable. You also need people around you who want to see you succeed.

At Notitia, constructively challenging each other is part of how we work. Different perspectives make the work stronger, but only when people feel comfortable contributing honestly.

That balance of challenge and support helps our team solve complex problems together. It also creates an environment where people can keep developing without feeling as though they need to know everything from the start.

Time together makes the work better

Our team works closely across client projects throughout the year, often across different areas of expertise and locations. Many of our projects will require end-to-end execution (which means a smooth handover between our design, analytics and web developers teams) or all hands on deck projects that need collaborate between everyone.

The annual offsite gives us time to connect outside the normal rhythm of meetings, deadlines and project delivery. It creates space for conversations between people who may not work together every day and strengthens the relationships behind our work.

That matters because good collaboration isn’t created by a process alone. It comes from knowing the people you work with, understanding how they think and trusting what they bring to the team.

Skilled people who work really well together

Our Queenstown offsite included plenty of skiing, a few challenges and a lot of fun. But the value of bringing everyone together extends well beyond the trip.

We came back knowing each other better, with stronger connections across the team and a renewed appreciation for the different strengths our people bring.

Because skilled people who work really well together produce better outcomes, for our team and for our clients.
