Technology projects are rarely built by one person alone. In this article, Notitia developer Ben Cuttance explores why collaboration, communication, and continuous learning play such an important role in delivering successful digital solutions.
Drawing on experience across healthcare and technology, Ben reflects on teamwork, client collaboration, and the value of diverse perspectives when delivering strong data and web projects.
Ben is currently working on a custom CRM platform for a community-focused organisation, alongside Notitia’s wider design, development, and data teams.
“It’s rewarding working closely with people across the same project,” he said. “I really enjoy the collaborative side of the work. There’s a whole team contributing to it from different perspectives.”
Building Technology Around Real Operational Needs
The platform is being built specifically for the community organisation’s operational needs and workflows. “It’s a bespoke platform designed specifically around our client’s needs and the way they work,” Ben said. “We’re building it from the ground up to support their operations properly.”
The organisation works closely with Indigenous young people and community members, helping support goals across areas including education, accommodation, wellbeing, and life outcomes. Ben said gaining an understanding of how organisations operate has been an important part of the project delivery process.
“One of the interesting parts of the project has been understanding how the client works operationally and what they actually need day-to-day,” he said.
“That’s been really valuable because it helps shape how we build the platform.”
Growing Across Different Areas of Development
For Ben, the project has also marked an important step forward professionally, particularly as he expands beyond front-end development into backend technologies and broader project responsibilities.
“Most of my experience before this was more front-end focused, working on the user interface and the things people directly interact with,” he said.
“This project’s given me the opportunity to broaden that experience and work more across the backend side as well.”
Ben said that he has been hugely supported throughout the project by Senior Web Developer, Livia Gu.
“Continous learning and career development are important at Notitia and we are supported really well by having a whole team around us in our journey,” Ben said.
Why Collaboration Creates Better Outcomes
At Notitia, working collaboratively across different disciplines creates stronger outcomes for clients and improves the way projects are delivered.
“Everyone works really well together when we’re delivering projects,” Ben says. “There’s a strong sense of collaboration across the business, even when people are working across different projects.”
One of the biggest differences between his previous healthcare career and technology work has been the continuity of building something together over time.
“There’s something really satisfying about working together on a project over a longer period of time and seeing it evolve,” he said.
Healthcare Experience Shaping Communication Skills in Tech Projects
Before moving into technology, Ben worked in nursing, where teamwork and communication were essential parts of day-to-day work. He says the experience helped shape the way he approaches communication and collaboration today.
“In healthcare, you learn pretty quickly how important communication is,” he said. “You need to be able to explain things clearly to different people and adjust the way you communicate depending on who you’re speaking with.”
Ben believes those communication skills have transferred naturally into technology and development work, particularly in client-facing projects.
“You need to be able to take complex ideas and explain them in a way that people can relate to,” he said.
“That’s really important when you’re working with clients, designers, developers, and different stakeholders across a project.”
A Supportive Team Culture
In his second year at Notitia, Ben says the supportive team culture has played a major role in his growth as a developer.
“There’s a really supportive environment at Notitia that encourages people to keep learning and growing,” he said.
“That’s made it much easier to build confidence, settle into the team, and continue developing professionally.”
The collaborative culture at Notitia stands out because people actively support each other across projects and disciplines, Ben says.
“There’s a lot of checking in with each other and making sure everyone’s moving in the right direction,” he said.
“Design will check with development, development checks with data, and people are always willing to help each other out.”
Cross-Disciplinary Digital Delivery
He says digital projects at Notitia centre on teamwork.
“At Notitia, you’ve got people across different disciplines contributing to the same project from start to finish,” he said.
“It includes collaboration between developers, designers, project managers, and data specialists.
“Liv’s working on part of the development work, Louise is involved from the project management side. Yuri and Carolina are leading the design work. Arturo is helping with the data side and planning out the database structure.”
According to Ben, this collaborative environment has also helped him grow professionally.
As his responsibilities have expanded, Ben says he has become more involved in client communication, timelines, and project planning.
“I’m looking at projects much more holistically now, I’m not just focused on the development component anymore.”
The Reward of Client Collaboration
He says interacting directly with clients and seeing their reactions to completed work has become one of the most fulfilling aspects of the role.
“I really enjoy working directly with clients,” he said.
“When you can show them something that genuinely helps and they’re excited by it, that’s a great feeling. That part of the job is really rewarding.”
Continuous Learning in Technology
Ben says one of the biggest lessons he has learned since moving into technology is becoming comfortable with continuous learning. Because technology is constantly evolving, developers are always adapting and learning new tools, systems, and ways of working, he said.
“You can’t really expect to work with the exact same technology week-to-week” he said.
“You’re constantly learning and pushing into new areas.”
Ben says that process has also helped him become more confident in trusting his own problem-solving ability.
“A big part of development is knowing how to research properly and find the information you need,” he said.
“You don’t always have every answer immediately, but you learn to trust that you can work through it and get to the solution.”
Why Diverse Perspectives Matter
The technology sector is also creating opportunities for more people to enter the industry from different backgrounds, Ben says.
“This is my second career, and I think it’s exciting that technology is becoming more accessible to different people,” he said. “The more perspectives you have in an industry, the better the outcomes can be.”
He believes that diversity of thinking becomes particularly valuable in digital projects where teams are solving practical, real-world problems for clients.
“Everyone approaches problems a little differently,” Ben adds.
“That’s one of the really interesting parts of working in technology and in collaborative teams.”
Balancing Independent Work and Teamwork
Ben adds that finding the right balance between independent work and collaboration has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of his career transition.
“I enjoy working independently and focusing deeply on development work,” he said. “But I also really enjoy interacting with people and working closely with a team. I’ve found this role gives me a really good balance between those two things.”
Ben says the opportunity to work across new technologies and complex projects is one of the most rewarding parts of digital delivery, particularly when combined with strong collaboration across teams.
“That’s probably one of the best parts of the work, being part of a team building something together,” he said.
